Treatment
The psychological treatment of choice for most forms of Anxiety Attack is usually Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). CBT refers to a family of techniques which have been shown by research to be effective. While the specific treatment strategies involved will vary depending upon the nature of a person’s anxiety attacks, treatment will usually entail techniques such as: relaxation strategies, thought challenging techniques, and desensitisation techniques. This approach to treatment emphasises the importance of an anxiety attack sufferer learning their own skills to manage attacks, rather than becoming reliant on the therapist.
Medicare rebates for up to 12 visits per year are now available for people referred to a Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist under a Mental Health Care Plan through their GP. (Some conditions apply so you should consult your GP for details).
(Rebates for consultations with Psychologists are currently $75 per 50+ minute consultation. For consultations with Clinical Psychologists the rebate is higher, currently $110 per 50+ minute consultation. As at 1/3/07).
In some cases medication treatments are recommended in addition to or instead of psychological approaches. You should consult a GP or specialist for advice on available medication approaches.
